美國馬里蘭州巴爾的摩市非裔青年葛雷疑因警方粗暴執法，導致嚴重脊傷死亡。但《華盛頓郵報》4月29日卻報導，根據自警方流出的文件，葛雷曾在警車上「猛撞車身」，似乎企圖自殘。由於跟先前報導大相逕庭，此消息引起一片強烈質疑與反駁。
《華盛頓郵報》表示，取得跟葛雷同搭警車的另一名囚犯口供。此人與葛雷隔著金屬隔板，看不見對方。他告訴警方，他聽到葛雷「猛撞警車」的聲響。他認為葛雷「故意試圖弄傷自已」。
同車囚犯︰他猛撞車身
《華郵》指出，支持囚犯說法的其他證據付之闕如，亦無該人在車上的影像。
此報導起初引起震撼，但馬上招來各方質疑。馬里蘭州WBAL廣播電台記者米勒反駁，華郵所言與先前報導相矛盾。她說，「我們之前報導，葛雷被送上警車時已沒有意識。再者，沒有醫療證據顯示葛雷自殘導致受傷。」
米勒說，葛雷與另一囚犯同車的時間，僅僅5分鐘而已，「沒有證據顯示葛雷用頭撞車身。」此外，巴爾的摩警察局長卑茲23日表示，另一名囚犯說葛雷在車上「大致上很安靜」。
家族律師︰懷疑正確性
葛雷家族律師道恩斯指出，「有關葛雷弄斷自己頸椎的任何說法，我們都不同意。對於警方報告的正確性，我們抱持懷疑。」
美國幾個立場保守的新聞網站，則流傳一篇來源隱匿的獨家報導，宣稱葛雷是在被捕1周前發生車禍以致脊傷，做了脊部與頸椎手術，非因警方粗暴執法。對此，葛雷家族律師回應，報導沒有事實證據，「純屬謠言」。
巴爾的摩當局將在5月1日結束調查，把案子交給州檢察官辦公室。但調查報告暫時不會公開。
